The Capitals were fined $100,000 by the NHL Wednesday for violating the league’s COVID-19 protocols.

The NHL did not reveal the details surrounding the Caps’ violation, just noting that players were involved in social interaction while not wearing masks.

“The National Hockey League announced today that it has fined the Washington Capitals $100,000 for Player violations of the League’s COVID‑19 Protocols which involved social interactions among team members who were in close contact and who were not wearing face coverings,” the league said in a statement.

As the NHL continues to execute a regular season during a global pandemic, several teams have had games postponed or rescheduled due to the league’s protocols. The Caps have not had to deal with a postponement yet but have had a few games rescheduled in some way due to changes in other teams’ schedules.

Washington has begun the 2021 season 2-0-2 and will return to the ice Friday for their home opener against the Sabres.
