COVID taking over the headlines

While it’s great that the NHL is back and has just completed its first complete week of the season, COVID-19 still seems to be dominating the headlines.

The biggest news this week was that the Carolina Hurricanes had an outbreak which is forcing the postponement of three games including one against Nashville and a pair versus Florida.

The news got worse on Wednesday when four members of the Washington Capitals were put into COVID protocol and will miss at least four games, although Washington will continue at this time to play without Alex Ovechkin, Ilya Samsonov, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dmitry Orlov as the four were caught in a hotel room in Pittsburgh in violation of the COVID-19 protocol set out by the NHL and the NHLPA. Samsonov apparently has COVID-19 and that will set the Capitals back for the upcoming week.

In addition, players from around the league go in and out of COVID protocol as the NHL is no longer in the bubbles they were in during the playoffs and are travelling to and from cities around their individual conferences.
